Who are we?
VedaVox is an online portal into the world of mathematics, mathematics researchers and their research and provides insight into the mathematics all around us!
Founded in 2014, and launched in January 2017, VedaVox is the culmination of years of planning and research by VedaVox’s founder, Pamela Brittain, that aims to bring online mathematics courses to the general population and bridge the gap between the mathematics most people are aware of and the fascinating world of mathematics that’s out there.
VedaVox aims to change not just mathematical skills, but attitudes and perceptions of this highly misunderstood, and fascinating, field.
What’s with our name?
The name VedaVox is a combination of two words:
- The Sanskrit word Veda, meaning Knowledge
- The Latin word Vox, meaning Voice
Since both languages are synonymous with knowledge and discovery, which aligns with our goals to provide knowledge to the masses through easy to access, online courses focused on mathematics and the subjects that mathematics touches (so just about everything), we thought it was a great choice to give us:
VedaVox: the Voice of Knowledge…
What are we here to do?
Our dream is to help people of all ages to better understand and apply mathematical concepts in their day to day lives and to showcase a fascinating (and often hidden) world of mathematics so that we can change the current attitude towards mathematics in our society today.
We do this by providing courses and content in an easy to understand format. Our lessons introduce you to people in the mathematics field and then invite you to explore the concepts in the comfort of your own home with a hands-on component you can do with very simple materials.
Who can take your courses?
Currently our courses are aimed at elementary school students and their parents, however there is no restriction on who our courses are open to. The topics presented will contain information on foundational knowledge required along with extension activities so that anyone will get something out of our courses.
The reason for this has to do with lots of research in this area (you can view this research on our Research page). You can also find out more in our blog post on Why Mathematics?. While our focus is on mathematics, many of our courses and lessons touch on a wide area of what are called the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) but, because math is so far-reaching, our lesson may also touch on concepts in art, music, culture, language and more.
You never know where your journey may lead, and that’s part of the adventure!
What’s in it for me?
Our goal is to spread a new word about mathematics to as many people as we can. We want people to let go of their preconceived fear of math and trust us for just a bit to show them new concepts that will change their view.
For you, and your children, this means seeing and experiencing the world through a new set of eye; to improve critical thinking skills and see the math in the world around you. It’s also a chance to meet some of the leaders in the mathematics community, and maybe find a new celebrity or role model to follow.
So come join us, experience the world of mathematics as you’ve never seen it before!
